Indians believed the lushly blanketed blue wild flowers caused the haze to look like blue mountains on the beach. While you'll find lily pads and marsh amid the trees, don't count on seeing any alligators or big red fish.

Historical Highlights

Despite the word "mountain" in this 30-A beach's name, you won't be seeing any sierra on this sea landscape. After all, the beach is less than 350 feet above sea level. As history goes, the original European pioneers might have mistaken the Blue Mountain area's soaring dunes for mountains. And, the vegetation covering the dunes, such as the pointy shape of the Gulf Coast lupine, probably caught their attention, too.

Surrounded by nature, including blue flowers and tall dunes, Blue Mountain Beach still has privacy and seclusion. You'll find just a mere couple of commercial businesses here along with a small number of residents. And, a café, health food store, and bike shop keep coastal, health-conscious locals and visitors contented on Highway 30-A.
In addition, hikers and bicyclists will love the Eastern Lake Hike/Bike Trail found at Blue Mountain Beach. This trail-chock-full of coastal lakes, lush woodlands and eye-catching beach homes-runs through the other South Walton beach communities.
