Dune Allen Beach

The blue, blue sea, dune lakes and lush trees make Scenic Highway 30-A and its garden-variety of beach communities a feast for the body and spirit!

No matter where you go in this beautiful beach town, you're sure to find plenty of blue sea and coastal lakes. One of the true delights of this place is that it surrounds Stallworth Lake-one of 17 unique coastal lakes that will take your breath away.

 

Location: Off the Emerald Coast Parkway you'll find Dune Allen, the first beach town on Scenic Highway 30-A as you travel east. Nearby are the rare coastal lakes, with their own biological communities, and are sprinkled here and there in South Walton County. Another coastal lake in Dune Allen, is Oyster Lake-and it has its own roots in Dune Allen's yesteryear.

Historical Highlights: In the shape of an oyster, Dune Allen's Oyster Lake was once chock-full of the delicacy. As the story goes, holiday visitors would picnic on its shore. And, if the water was too high, folks would dig a trench form the lake to the gulf to the get the water to run off. The effect? The lower the water level, the easier to scoop up oysters.
Also, back in the late 19th century, the northeast side of Stallworth Lake provided housing coined the "Quarters" for the Turpentine Workers. It was a southern home to both black and white people out of work and in need of a place to live. In fact, this was a grassroots integrated sanctuary in northern Florida-one of the first successful interracial neighborhoods in Florida.

The Community: These days, Dune Allen is known for its teaching veterinary hospital (the only one on 30-A), and it also provides its residents with Butler Elementary School. You'll find residential homes nestled in the dunes bordering both sides of the road. In this beach town, both beachfront and vacation houses are popular.
