Grayton Beach

The blue, blue sea, dune lakes and lush trees make Scenic Highway 30-A and its garden-variety of beach communities a feast for the body and spirit!

The enchanting, natural beach beauty. . . the breathtaking beachfront and dock on beautiful Western Lake-these are reasons enough to head to Grayton Beach. But there's more to this picturesque paradise than white sand and aquamarine waters. This beach community is a historic wonderland for people of all ages

Location: Part of the beautiful Grayton Beach State park, which covers the Gulf of Mexico and majority of Western Lake, has something for everyone.

Grayton Beach, the first beach community discovered in South Walton, is truly appreciated by landlubbers and water-goers abound.

Historical Highlights: As the legend goes, in the late 19th century, Grayton beach was coined after Charles T. Gray, an Army major who decided to build a home with his wife. Later, due to a fire they lost everything and it was over a quarter century before people began to establish Grayton Beach.
In the past, there were a lot of challenges to discourage residents from settling down in Grayton Beach. Not only was the land difficult to get to due to narrow roads and no bridges over the southern part of Choctawhatchee Bay, it was unsuitable for farming-and it was also government property. But, in the early 20th century things changed. It's believed that the Butler group came to Grayton Beach with development on their mind. And, build they did as well as sell lots and rent cottages. These developers also ran a store-which converted into a popular dancing spot on the weekend.

The Community: These days, while Grayton has more residents it still maintains that old-fashioned, small town-vibe. You'll find a variety of residents, from dedicated college students and laid-back surfers, to tennis buffs and golfers. Rustic and renovated cottages, narrow streets bordered by trees, and friendly folks give this place character and charm. The so-called historical "downtown" area offers artsy shops, B&B lodging, dining and a store. The best part? Grayton Beach State Park, a natural wonder, attracts both locals and visitors because of its down-to-earth beauty. Its hiking trail-not a long trek-is simply irresistible complete with spectacular eye-catching beach dunes. Of course, it's no surprise to find a mix of campers (from tents to cabins) right here soaking in the beauty of it all. And don't forget the public dock on Scenic Western Lake. It provides access by way of canoe or kayak to enjoy one the grand dune lakes of Florida.
