Historical Highlights: There is no mystical connotation to the name Sea Grove. Actually, the beach was named after its oak trees-a natural refuge from the horrific hurricanes that hit the Northern Floridian coast. One hundred years ago, Seagrove Beach was called "Russ's Hammock," a leisurely spot that was hard to get to. The way to this beach paradise was by taking a small road from the north via Point Washington. But, this remote beach town didn't stop the McGee family from settling here and owning property. And, in the mid-20th century, other families traveled to Seagrove Beach. It was "in" to rent one-story cottages with paddle fans and wide-screened porches. Fun activities included swimming and building sandcastles. Throughout the years, these families continued to enjoy the laid-back lifestyle and handed it down to their children and their children.
