About Beaches

Indeed, our beaches are touted as the "World's Most Beautiful Beaches." But, the official designation as the Number One Beach ranking in America came when St. Andrews State Recreation Areas received this honor.

Panama City Beach also received the Number one rating in the country, above beaches in exotic Hawaii, cool California and other areas of Florida. We give kudos University of Maryland coastal geologist Dr. Stephen Leatherman. It was his work, commissioned by Conde Naste Traveler to rate coastal beach parks in the United States. And, after he studied environmental, biological, and human factors at over 650 American beaches-he gave Panama City Beach the top rating.

Ever wonder about our white, white sand? Blame it on quartz crystals washing down from the Appalachian Mountains centuries ago. As time passes, these crystals have been bleached and ground, smoothed and polished until an infinite amount of grains of sand have settled along the Northwest Florida coast.

Seasons

Panama City Beach's climate is a winner. The average water air temperature is a comfortable 74 degrees; and the water temperature is in the 70s. The tourist season starts early in March before Spring and continues through October during the fall. During wintertime, visitors from the colder climates find Panama city Beach's mild temperatures a warm welcome. Plus, special events are held each year fo snowbirds (as they are tagged by the locals), including welcome parties and bridge and golf tournaments.

During winter, cold snaps don't usually last more than two days in Panama City Beach due to Gulf stream breezes. And, springtime blooms early. By February, warm temperatures are luring sun lovers to the beaches and by March even more people of all ages are soaking up the warm sunshine. Panama City Beach is one of the country's hottest college Spring Break spots. Many families also head for Panama city Beach as their Easter holiday place. Amusement parks and other beach attractions are at their peak between Memorial Day and Labor Day when parents and kids enjoy summer vacation at Panama City Beach. Palms, ferns, live oaks, and scrub oak abound are just some of the lush tropical and sub-tropical vegetation here in Panama City Beach. Also, pampas, grass, philodendron and beautiful flowering plants will greet you. It's due to our mild temperatures. One of the essential plants in the area is sea oats. This is a hardy grass which grow on the dunes close by the beach, and it helps to trap sand and stave off beach erosion. This, in turn, helps the root system hold the sand in place, stabilizing the soil against both wind and the Gulf. In fact, sea oats are so vital to our land they are protected by law-they are to be left alone.

Access

Panama City Beach is conveniently located. The beach front community is about 300 miles from Atlanta, New Orleans and Orlando; 500 miles from Memphis; and 700 miles from St. Louis, Cincinnati and Houston. Interstate 10 runs east and west, just 30 miles to the north. U.S. 231 drops down almost to the beach.

Jet airline service is available to and from our area, with flights from a variety of carriers with daily arrivals and departures at Panama city International Airport. In addition, the airport has both taxi and limousine service as well as major car rentals. Two fixed-base operations for a general aviation offer a full range of services.
